Zachary Boyd, 19, was sleeping when his platoon in Afghanistan was attacked by the Taliban. Boyd was wakened in a hurry and rushed to his command post dressed as he was in his off duty sleep wear. Boyd was wearing a red T shirt, pink boxer shorts and slippers. His boxers said “I love NY”.

Boyd fastened on his body armor, helmet and grabbed his weapon to take up his position on the reinforced tower. Boyd had made it known that he joined the Army because of the September 11 attacks that brought down NY’s twin towers.

A photographer snapped Boyd in action in his patriotic boxers. The photo made it to the front page of The New York Times. Zachary phoned his mother, Sheree Boyd, to warn her that his picture would be in the newspapers. Zachary Boyd was afraid he would lose his job because he was out of uniform when he was fighting.

Zachary Boyd graduated from Keller Central High School in 2007. Boyd was promoted to Army Specialist last week.

Zachary’s father, Tommy Boyd, was interviewed by his local Texas radio station WBAP.
