Wendy Portillo, a teacher in Morningside Elementary School, was suspended without pay for 1 year. The county school board thought Portillo did wrong by having her class vote on a boy named Alex.

Alex is suspected to have autism and his behavior caused Portillo to hold the class vote when she asked the children if Alex should be allowed to stay on in class. Alex’s classmates voted 14-2 against him. Portillo said she will be contesting the suspension. Alex’s mother, Ms Melissa Barton, felt strongly about this and said Wendy Portillo should be fired.
