Vincent Van Gogh added mystery when another one of his early paintings was revealed to contain a woman. Vincent Van Gogh painted over the woman and did his Patch Of Grass. Vincent Van Gogh recycled his canvass.

A used canvas can be recycled by painting one or more basecoats of white paint over the painting. Modern artists also do that. It is cheaper to buy old, framed pictures and re-use the canvas by painting over the old art. The base coat adds texture to the canvas.
