Van Wastell was a skilled skateboarder who was recognized and sponsored by several companies. Wastell was about to turn professional in his sport of skateboarding.

Van Wastell was in Berlin, Germany, in his hotel room, when he reportedly fell out through a window, on September 5. There were no other details.
