Tyler Hamilton: Why Tyler Hamilton retired (photo)

By Clarencia Cynrae on April 17th, 2009

Tyler Hamilton announced his retirement from cycling on Friday, April 17. Why did Tyler Hamilton retire? Hamilton gave his reason as having tested positive for a banned substance. Hamilton said he took a herbal product for two days in February 2009.

Hamilton admitted he was aware the supplement contained a steroid. Apparently, Hamilton’s need to use the product to fight his depression was strong and his judgment was impaired.

The US Anti-Doping Agency may impose a ban on Hamilton. The usual punishment is 8 years to life ban. Eight years is a long time and that would have been the chopping block for Hamilton’s career. Hamilton has anticipated the consequences and moved in step with his predicament.

Tyler Hamilton was once touted as Lance Armstong’s successor. Guess professional cycling will have to look elsewhere.
