Troy Davis: Supreme Court examines Troy Davis case

Twenty-seven former prosecutors and judges have written their support for Troy Davis. Seven witnesses have recanted their earlier testimonies. Some witnesses have implicated the prosecution’s main witness and implied that person could have been responsible for Mark MacPhail’s death.

Troy Davis reprieved: Troy Davis’ execution postponed
Troy Davis, 39, has a last minute stay of his execution. Troy Davis, of Georgia, had a reprieve less than 2 hours before his scheduled execution on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Troy Davis was accused of killing a police man in 1989.

Troy Davis had supporters who called for a new trial. Seven out of nine witnesses recanted their testimonies. There was a busload of protesters carrying placards.
The crowd numbered about 50 people. They cheered when the postponement was announced at 5:20 pm. Troy Davis spoke to his supporters from a prison phone. Davis was grateful for their support. His mother, Virginia Davis, was there. A pastor, Rev. Al Sharpton, accompanied the Davis family and other supporters. They sang a song of praise to God after the good news reached them.
Mark MacPhail, the off duty police officer who was killed, had a sister, Annelie Reaves. Reaves issued a statement outside of prison in Jackson after the stay was issued. Reaves said she felt there was no new evidence to exonerate Davis.

Troy Davis to die for killing Mark MacPhail
Troy Davis was convicted of murdering Mark MacPhail, a Savannah police officer, in 1989. MacPhail, 27, was working in another job while he was off-duty from police work. MacPhail was working as a security guard at a bus station when he was fatally shot.
Seven out of the nine witnesses have recanted their stories of the case in Atlanta. Some people rallied around to try to save Troy Davis because of this. There was a request for a new trial. The Georgia pardons board had a meeting and denied clemency for death row inmate Troy Davis. No reasons were given.
Troy Davis was sentenced to death by execution on September 23. His mother seemed reluctant to save him. Mrs. Davis said that Troy was judged by a jury and the decision should be adhered to.
