Updated – On Thursday, August 6, Tia Shorts pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of obstructing police investigation in a drug deal. Tia Shorts will be sentenced in November 2009. Ms Shorts has refused to talk to the press.

Tia Shorts, the former Miss Maryland USA in 2004, was arrested. Tia Shorts was arrested in Germantown, Md.

Police have claimed Tia Shorts and her boyfriend, Joey King, had made transactions in drugs from their shared apartment. Tia Shorts was charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine, possession of cocaine and marijuana.

Police acted on a tipoff on Tuesday night, March 31. They stopped Joey King and found heroin, crack cocaine and a lot of cash. On Wednesday, April 1, they checked King’s brother and mother after they had visited the apartment. Police found cocaine, a gun, and money. Police found Tia Shorts in the apartment with drugs.

Tia Shorts was released from jail after she paid a bond of $10,000. Miss Maryland USA pageant organizers said they never kept in contact with Tia Shorts.
