Thomas Dart vs Craigslist: Dart sues Craigslist
By Therese Lisieux on March 6th, 2009Thomas Dart, the Sheriff of Cook County in Illinois, filed a lawsuit against Craigslist owners. Dart’s federal lawsuit accused Craigslist, an online classified ads website, of promoting prostitution.
Dart wants Craigslist owners to remove the section of classified ads on “Erotic Services”. Dart said minors, runaways, abused woman and illegal immigrants were controlled by pimps who find clients for their hookers using Craigslist. The FBI did its research and found more than 2800 child prostitution ads on Craigslist. Illinois is one of the top 10 cities with high statistics for child prostitution.
While the spokeswoman for Craigslist claimed the website prevented misuse of Craigslist for criminal activity, she also said misuse of the website was rare. While criminal activities were “rare”, and “not tolerated”, the Erotic Services still existed.
That was what Dart pointed out. Dart claimed he had asked Craigslist owners to remove Erotic Services but he was ignored for the past 2 years. The details of both parties have been reported by CNN here.
