The ghost hunters at syfy channel and website investigated Essex County Hospital on Halloween October 2009. The ghost hunters are Tango and Steve and the host of the program was Josh Gates.

The Essex County Hospital is in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. In 1896, the Hospital was named the Overbrook Hospital. There were a few emergencies like the breakdown of the heater system in winter, the Great Depression, and World War II. During these times, many people died in Overbrook. The estimated number was 10,000.

Patients were subjected to preventive treatments for mental illness and these methods caused sufferings. Since Overbrook was in Essex County, it began to be also known as the Essex County Hospital.

The 1960s – 70s saw the use of anti-psychotic drugs. In 1990s, the number of mental patients was drastically reduced.

In 2007, Essex County decided to turn the Hospital into a county park. It reversed its original decision to convert the land into a housing area. Perhaps the decision was influenced by rumors that the hospital was haunted. Some buildings of the Hospital were demolished.

In 2008, two TV shows, the Ghost Adventures and the Ghost Hunters, featured Essex County Hospital. The teams of ghost hunters derived at their conclusions that Essex County Hospital was haunted.
