Susie White: Susie White First European SILS patient (photos)

Susie White, 30, a nurse, in Britain, has become the first person in Europe to have a ground breaking surgery. Susie White had her kidney removed through a small incision in her belly button. White had Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS).

Surgeons cut an incision less an inch wide in the naval. Their surgical tools were also less than an inch wide. White’s kidney was enclosed in special net bag to hold it together while it was being cut into smaller pieces. The bag with the broken up kidney was pulled through the small hole in the belly button.

Dr Abhay Rane, a urologist expert, was one of the leading British surgeons trained to perform SILS. Dr Rane had already done a kidney removal using SILS in India.

SILS enables the patient to recover faster and experience less pain. The belly button has fewer nerve endings to feel the pain. There is less tissue at the naval and thus it takes lesser time to heal.

SILS is different from keyhole surgery. A keyhole surgery needs a few holes to be made to accommodate the cameras. There is a high failure rate for a keyhole surgery as the technique has not been perfected.
