SNL Thursday Night Live: SNL Special
By Clarencia Cynrae on October 10th, 2008*
This is the first of three episodes of SNL Thursday Night, whose video is here. These SNL Thursday prime time scheduled slots cover politics. SNL Thursday featured the parody on the second presidential debate. SNL cast of Darrell Hammond portrayed John McCain, while Fred Armisen took on Barack Obama. SNL special guest actors were Chris Parnell as Tom Brokaw, and William “Bill” Murray as a member of the audience who asked a question.
Chris Parnell took the heat as the moderator who bore the brunt of the ire of everyone. Parnell imposed a strict time limit of about 35 seconds to each candidate to answer the questions. SNL took into account that Tom Brokaw had reminded the real candidates the issue of confining within the strict time limit.
The stand up comic with a routine was good. Both candidates were cut off even as they missed answering the questions because the time limit was up. While Fred Armisen was answering one question, Darrell Hammond walked around him, like a shark circling its prey. The skit showed that it cared none for the answers of the candidates and the presidential debate at SNL was for comedy. William Murray received warm applause from the audience of SNL when he acted his role as a questioner. Murray read a question about the Cubs. SNL never forgot the intense competition of sports on its mainstream programming.
Obama was parodied as being optimistic while McCain was always pessimistic. The clock ran out on SNL. Chris Parnell had both questioners read simultaneously. It was funny. Then both candidates had to answer simultaneously. This was outrageous humor on SNL. At the end of the debate, the presidential candidates gave each other high-fives.
