Skin cancer genes: Genetics affects skin cancer (videos)

By Therese Lisieux on October 11th, 2009

Skin cancer can be inherited if you have the genes that carry the susceptibility of getting skin cancer. If you have a parent or sibling with skin cancer, it means you have a higher risk of getting skin cancer.

If you have an identical twin who has skin cancer, your chances of getting skin cancer are higher than if you were a fraternal twin.

If your sibling or parent has skin cancer, you will have increased risks of getting different forms of skin cancer.

Genetics can assess the probability of a person getting skin cancer. Once the risk is known, the patient can be treated or preventive steps can be taken.

How do you prevent getting skin cancer?
