Shylea Myza Thomas, 9, was found dead in a public storage unit in Vienna Township, Michigan. Thomas’ remains were found in a trash bag with moth balls to mask the odor of decay.

Thomas was a quadriplegic who needed care. Thomas was dependent on her feeding tube for her nourishment. Thomas was an adopted child of her aunt and she lived in Flint, Michigan.

When her relatives realized she was missing from her adoptive mother’s home for 6 weeks, they made a police report. Thomas’ mother is now detained in police custody.

Police will investigate the manner in which Thomas died. Her adoptive mother is at least guilty of welfare fraud as she continued to receive payments after Shylea Thomas’ death. Police are considering other charges like child abuse, child neglect and murder.
