Shane Symington: Symington victim of two internet scams (photos)
By Clarencia Cynrae on January 15th, 2009Shane Symington, a postman, lost 130,000 pounds when he was a victim in an internet scam. Symington made friends online with a woman named “Angela Gates”. Gates soon asked for money to pay for her mother’s medical expenses and a funeral. Symington was asked for money for legal fees to release land owned by Gates’ mother.
Symington, of Portsmouth, Hampshire, forked out 100,000 pounds. Then Gates stopped communicating with him. Symington contacted a website he thought was the FBI but that was another fake. Symington was persuaded to pay 30,000 pounds to hire 2 ex-FBI agents to try to recover his money from Gates. Gates had now revealed that he was from Nigeria and he was a man.
Symington later found out that the FBI website was another scam. He had been scammed twice by the same group of people or man. Symington shared his story to warn others about trusting people online.
