Lucia Whalen called 911 when she saw two men trying to break into the house. Whalen did not say the race or the men.

Updated July 23 – Sgt James Crowley, who has been accused of racism when he arrested Henry Gates Jr, has a long history. Crowley was a campus officer on duty on July 27, 1993, when he tried to save Reggie Lewis. Lewis, a black man, had a heart attack and Crowley tried to revive him by giving him mouth to mouth resuscitation.
Reggie Lewis, a black man, was a big basketball star and people asked if Crowley had done enough to try to save Lewis. Crowley, now 42, related the anecdote to show that he was not a racist.
James Crowley said he bore no resentment towards Professor Henry Gates Jr. Crowley said he will not be apologizing to Gates as he felt he did nothing wrong. Crowley is a veteran on the force with 11 years of experience under his belt. Crowley coaches youths in basketball, baseball and softball.
President Obama said cops acted stupidly.

Henry Louis Gates Jr, the department head of WEB DuBois Institute for African & African American Studies in Harvard University, was arrested. Gates was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Gates was on his front porch, when he was suspected of trying to break into his own home. A caller tipped off the police.
When an officer arrived to ask for information, Gates refused to talk but accused the police man of racism. Gates was arrested after some loud behavior where he accused the cop of racism. This is an unusual incident for a man of high standing in Harvard University.

Gates’ friends said he was already inside his home when police arrived. Gates showed them his ID but they insisted on taking him away to the police station. A writer claimed Gates was loud after the cops insisted on taking him to the station. He suggested racism may be involved.

Henry Louis Gates Jr was ill with a respiratory infection and he was irritated when police knocked on his door to ask for information. That was the explanation for his reaction.
Police have decided to drop the charges against Henry Gates Jr.
Lucia Whalen, 40, works at Harvard’s news and alumni magazine affiliated with Harvard University. Whalen was the white woman who called police about seeing two black men trying to enter a house.
