Tamika Riley was the girlfriend of Sharpe James while he was the Mayor of Newark. Then, Tamika Riley and Sharpe James were convicted of fraud and conspiracy in some land deals between 2001 – 2005.

In April 2008, a jury convicted Tameka Riley and Sharpe James because thye concluded that Riley enjoyed preferential treatment to buy state land because of her relationship to Sharpe James.
Sharpe James failed to disclose his relationship to Tameka Riley before signing the city contracts to sell the properties.
Tameka Riley had worked as a publicist in Jersey City. Tameka Riley was further found guilty of tax evasion and lying about her income. Tameka Riley collected housing subsidies and deceived the state.
