Sergio Garcia, 18, is a gay teenager in Fairfax High School in LA. Garcia was crowned Prom Queen on Saturday night, May 23. Garcia wore a dark gray tuxedo. Garcia said he would not be dressed as a girl but wished to be himself. Garcia took risks to challenge the status quo and he won.

Some students were unhappy Garcia was in the running for the contest for Prom Queen instead of Prom King. There were mixed reactions as Garcia was praised by others for his open stance and attitude on gender and convention. Garcia said he felt he was better qualified to compete in the Prom Queen category.
