The 2009 Sauna World Championship was held in Heinola, Finland. One hundred sixty women and men from 23 countries participated in the Sauna World Championship.

Tatyana Arkhipenko, of Russia, won the women’s title. Ms Arkhipenko stayed 3 minutes 9 seconds in the sauna.

Timo Kaukonen, of Finland, won the men’s section. Mr Kaukonen lasted 3 minutes 46 seconds in the sauna.

The temperature in the sauna was 110 degrees Celsius. The heat was maintained every 30 seconds with 500 ml of water being poured over the hot stones. Many competitors had to surrender as the heat overcame them. They ran out of the saunas to get relief.
