Updated July 11 2009 – Sania Mirza & Sohrab Mirza became engaged on Friday night, July 10. The Mirza couple were engaged in an elaborate party ceremony attended by around 300 guests. Traditional gifts were exchanged by the fiance and fiancee’s families.

The engagement party guests were treated to a grand feast. Sania Mirza’s tennis sponsor, the GVK Group of Industries, stepped up to the plate to sponsor her engagement party too. The party was at the Hotel Taj Krishna, in Hyderabad.

Security was tight. On Wednesday, July 8, two young men started to create some trouble by appearing at Sania Mirza’s house. The men declared they loved Sania and made demands that she should cancel her planned engagement to Sohrab Mirza.

Consequently, the press and outsiders were not invited to witness the private engagement ceremony of Sania Mirza and Sohrab Mirza.

Sania Mirza will leave for the US as she wants to play in the US Open. Her father said the couple will get married in a few years’ time as Sania wants to concentrate on her tennis career before she gets married.

Sania Mirza, the tennis player, is rumored to be engaged or marrying Sohrab Mirza. Mr Mirza is a businessman based in Hyderabad. There are negotiations for a possible marriage and sources alleged that the talks have reached a fruitful final stage. Sania Mirza has sports related injuries and her career in tennis may be over. Ms Mirza may be interested to start a settled, married life in 2010.

Sania Mirza has bene linked to Marat Safin, Shahid Kapoor and Navadip Palaplu.

Sohrab Mirza is the son of Adil Mirza and Noora Begum, the owners of Universal Bakers chain in the city of Hyderabad. Sohrab Mirza is 1 year senior to Sania. Mr Mirza is a graduate from St Mary’s College, UK. Mr Mirza has a B Com and will study for a MBA in UK.

A source said that Mirza and Mirza families have known one another for a long time and the marriage was discussed before. However, different sources have mentioned different reports on the marriage. One source said Sohrab Mirza will study while Sania remains playing tennis until he graduates from his MBA. Another source said the Mirza couple will get married very soon, on July 10, 2009.
