Sacheen Littlefeather was born Maria Cruz. Littlefeather is an American Indian activist. Littlefeather became famous when Marlon Brando sent her to give his speech at the Oscar Award ceremony. Brando won his Oscar for his role in “The Godfather”, at the 45th Annual Academy Awards® in 1973.

Littlefeather attended in Apache dress and said Brando sent her on his behalf. Brando had prepared a very long speech to protest against the treatment of American Indians at Wounded Knee, in South Dakota.
