Russell Dunham: World War II hero Russell Dunham died
By Therese Lisieux on April 9th, 2009Russell Dunham, an army veteran of World War II who was awarded the Medal of Honor, has died. Dunham died Monday, April 6. Dunham died in his home in Godfrey, Illinois. Dunham had congestive heart failure at 89.
Dunham was a brave soldier on Jan 8, 1945. Dunham was at Kayserberg, France, on the French-German border. Dunham attacked 3 German machine gun emplacements and killed 9 German soldiers. Dunham was wounded but he kept on going to destroy the third machine gun emplacement.
Dunham was awarded the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest decoration for valor. When the war ended, Dunham worked with the Veterans Administration in St Louis. Dunham held the post of a benefits counselor.
Dunham was married to Mary Dunham and later divorced from her. Dunham married Wilda Long-Bazzell. Mrs Dunham died in 2002.
Russell Dunham is survived by his daughter, stepdaughters, three sisters and three granddaughters.
