Rick Sanchez DUI, Rick Sanchez hit and run death
By Clarencia Cynrae on October 14th, 2009Rick Sanchez did a hit and run on December 10, 1990. Sanchez hit a pedestrian named Jeffrey Smuzinick. Sanchez was driving near Dolphin Stadium when Smuzinick suddenly dashed across the road. Smuzinick was paralyzed after the hit.
Rick Sanchez was not tested for alcohol at the time of the hit and run. Sanchez stopped his car after the hit but later, he left the scene. Sanchez’s lawyer said he left the scene to have a couple of drinks at home to calm his nerves. Sanchez later returned to the scene of the accident.
Eyewitnesses said Sanchez ignored the victim Smuzinick and protested to police that alcohol tests would hurt his public image. A police officer said Sanchez’s breath smelled of alcohol. The alcohol test was given only after 1 hour and 15 minutes after the accident.
Sanchez claimed he tried to help the injured man Smuzinick but eye witnesses denied this.
Sanchez was not charged with causing the accident but he was charged with DUI. Sanchez pleaded no contest to the charge of driving under the influence.
About 4-5 years later, Smuzinick died in an assisted living center in 1995.
