Richard Martin, 73, fought the Jesusita Fire alone. Martin saved his home. Martin had a homemade fireproof bunker. Martin and his wife stayed inside the bunker but came out periodically to check on the sprinklers. Richard Martin and Penny Martin used a hose to extinguish spot fires. They watered down all the wood surfaces on the exterior of their home.

Richard Martin ignored the local Fire Department’s evacuation orders. Martin had faith in his fireproof bunker. Martin’s house was built some 30 years ago but he fitted 5 sprinklers on the roof and had water hoses to fight small fires. Martin watered his house periodically to keep it wet during the raging fire all around his property.
