Updated June 6 2009 – The judge sentenced Raymond Lee Oyler to death.

Updated on March 18: The jury has recommended the death penalty for Raymond Lee Oyler. Oyler will be sentenced in June 5, 2009.

Raymond Lee Oyler, 38, has been convicted as guilty of being a fire starter. Oyler was found guilty of 5 counts of first degree murder. Oyler had set off a wildfire at Esperanza, near Cabazon. Five fire fighters died and around 54 homes were burned.

Capt. Mark Allen Loutzenhiser, 43, and firefighters Jason Robert McKay, 27, Jess Edward McLean, 27, Daniel Hoover-Najera, 20, and Pablo Cerda, 24 were brave fire fighters who died on the job.

There will be a penalty phase trial to decide on the sentencing. Oyler may be sentenced to life in prison or the death sentence. This trial is expected to last about 2 weeks.
