Queen Beatrix was on a special bus traveling down a street in Apeldoorn. A man, 38, drove his car into the crowd. It was the national holiday called the Queen’s Day in Netherlands. Queen Beatrix, 71, and her Royal family were on the bus being driven to a palace in Apeldoorn. Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife, Princess Maxima were seen looking at the car in horror.

The driver of a black Suzuki Swift killed 5 people, seriously injured 8 others and left 5 with minor injuries. The driver had head injuries and was unconscious when the car came to a stop.

Police refused to name the driver. Police described him as a white man, with no criminal history and no record of mental illness. His neighbors said he lost his job, and faced eviction from his home. The suspect has been hospitalized under heavy police guard. Some reports said he admitted doing an assassination attempt on Queen Beatrix.

Queen Beatrix of Netherlands addressed her people in a TV broadcast after the incident. Queen Beatrix said she was shocked and upset. Queen Beatrix canceled all other celebrations across the country.
