Paul Hammond: Paul Hammond killed after threats
By Clarencia Cynrae on June 7th, 2009Paul Hammond, 47, died after a standoff with police in an emergency room of Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez. Hammond had arrived at the hospital on Saturday night, June 6, because of chest pains. Hammond was treated and had been inside the hospital’s ER for several hours.
Suddenly, Hammond pulled out a knife and threatened a nurse. The nurse summoned deputies who tried to persuade Hammond to lay down the knife. Police claimed Hammond failed to respond to the order to put down his weapon.
In the early hours of Sunday, June 7, deputies decided to fire at Hammond for the sake of safety issues. There were patients in the ER when the incident happened. The deputies deemed it was necessary to contain the threat for the sake of the people in the ER.
Paul Hammond died at the scene. His death will be investigated in an autopsy on Monday, June 8. Hammond was known to have received treatment for his condition regularly at the hospital.
