Paul Gerrard helped blind Jim O’Neill land Cessna plane
By Therese Lisieux on November 8th, 2008Jim O’Neill, a British Pilot, was suddenly blinded by a stroke in midair. O’Neill was on a solo flight and went blind about 40 minutes into his solo journey flying from Scotland to southeastern England. Jim O’Neill was flying last week in his small, Cessna aircraft, when he lost his eyesight at 5,500 feet in the air.
Paul Gerrard, a RAW Wing Commander pilot, was nearby and he flew near to O’Neill’s plane to radio instructions. Gerrard said that it was very difficult to land an aircraft without using sight. Jim O’Neill said that Paul Gerrard and the RAF were “just tremendous” in aiding him to land his plane safely.
Daily Mail has photos of Jim O’Neill and the RAF radio tower team that helped him land his Cessna.
