Palin Biden debate results are here. Who won VP debate on 10/2/08?
It was a very tight debate with Palin-Biden. The below is only a summary. Please read the transcript to decide for yourself who won the debate.
On the issue of a Vice President’s role:
Biden reinforces with definite plans. Biden defines VP role while Palin re-defines with her revelation she wants to lead as a VP. Biden illustrates when McCain voted against some policies and recanted his earlier promises. Palin was not outdone. Palin quoted an instance where Obama went 180 degrees when it suited him.
Biden said that Pakistan & Afghanistan are the sources of terror, not Iraq. That is why the Democrats want the troops to withdraw from Iraq. Biden said the focus should be on Pakistan & Afghanistan, not Iraq. Palin said Iraq is the focus and America is winning in Iraq, which is why the Republicans do not want a quick withdrawal. Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden operate out of Pakistan & Afghanistan, not Iraq.
Biden said American should pull out of Iraq while Plain disagreed because a quick withdrawal is a white flag of surrender.
Both Palin and Biden agreed that marriage should not be redefined with same sex marriages.
Palin said no child gets left behind but Biden accused the Republicans of cutting budget on education.
One major debate was on the national economy. Palin stressed the need for lowering of taxes, creation of jobs and help for businesses. Biden hit back with the stale favorite by referring to George Bush’s track record with the economy.
Palin gave her personal background to argue she identified with the average American. She wanted to emphasize she understood the struggles of the Americans whereas a Washington politician may not be in touch at the grassroots level. Biden understood and countered her accusations by his anecdotes of his struggles as a single parent during his widower status.
Palin faced the disadvantage of being the first to start the ball rolling. By being the second, Biden could attack her points and round up his views.
Palin tried to reach out to Alaskans by involving them in her talk. Sadly, it would take more than Alaska to win the election for the Republicans.
The moderator, Gwen Ifill, is a known Democrat. Ifill has also written a book on Obama and the politics of race. Ifill was fair as a moderator. Except the part that she tried to give the lady the first go at speaking and that made Palin the victim of her own words.
As usual, the Republicans will insist they have won, while the Democrats maintain they had the winning hand.
Some basic polls suggested Obama-Biden won. Please refer to source for details.
