Olympic silver medalist Lee Chong Wei will be made Datuk Lee Chong Wei

Lee Chong Wei, 26, Malaysia’s national singles badminton player, will be awarded the honorary title of Datuk. Lim Guan Eng, Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general, defends the Penang Government decision to award Lee Chong Wei the title of Datuk.

Lim Guan Eng said that Lee Chong Wei’s age was not an issue. Lee Chong Wei has an appointment to receive the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) from Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas on Aug 30. Chong Wei is the second youngest sporting personality in Malaysia to be conferred the award. Datuk Nicole Ann David, 24, had her title after she achieved accolade in squash. Lee Chong Wei will receive a cash bonus of RM300,000 and a life pension of RM3,000 per month from the Federal Government for winning a silver medal in Beijing Olympics 2008.
