Nikola Kavaja: Nikola Kavaja, former hijacker, died
By Clarencia Cynrae on November 11th, 2008Nikola Kavaja, the Serb who hijacked a plane to crash it into Yugoslav Communist Party headquarters, died. Nikola Kavaja died of a heart attack while he was at his home in Belgrade on Monday, Nov. 10.Kavaja had hijacked an American Airlines Boeing 707 in New York. Kavaja said he intended to crash it into the Communist party headquarters in Belgrade.
Kavaja did not follow through with his intention because he said he did not know the exact lkocation of the headquarters and he did not want innocent Serbian civilians to die if he crashed into the wrong building. Nikola Kavaja was extradited to the US for hijacking a US plane. Nikola Kavaja was convicted and sentenced to prison. Kavaja stayed jailed for 18 years until his parole in 1999. Kavaja’s parole would have ended in 2019. Some Serbians thought he was a patriotic hero, while others thought he was a terrorist.
