Nicholas Bendle, of Santa Maria, California, has been arrested for murder. Bendle, 20, was charged with the murder of Frederick Holgate, 69. Holgate was attacked on Saturday, while he was walking outdoors. Bendle allegedly decapitated Holgate as the elderly man was taking his morning walk.

A hatchet was used as a weapon. Police said the hatchet was stolen during a home burglary that occurred recently. Police do not know the motive for the killing.

Bendle was reported by his family member as being missing. Someone from his home called police to say Nicholas returned home covered in blood.
