Bill McLaughlin met Nanette Packard McNeal through a personal ad in the early 1990s. McLaughlin, a wealthy Newport Beach businessman, supported McNeal and her two children and provided a roof over their heads.In 1994, McLaughlin was fatally shot by what was thought to be an intruder.

Nanette Packard McNeal was allegedly dating Eric Naposki, a former National Football League player for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. McNeal dated Naposki on the sly while dating McLaughlin.

Now, 15 years later, police said they think Naposki shot McLaughlin. Naposki was working as a bouncer in a nightclub next to McLaughlin’s home. After Naposki allegedly committed the murder, he returned to work.

McNeal disputed this allegation. McNeal said Naposki was with her. McNeal may have had financial gain as a motive as she was to collect $1 million in a life insurance policy.

McLaughlin had no known enemies.

Updated June 11 2009 – Eric Naposki pleaded not gulty to the charge of killing Bill McLaughlin.
