Mundy & Mighall: Syb Mundy rescued Hannah Mighall from Great White

By Therese Lisieux on January 18th, 2009

Hannah Mighall,13, said a great white shark, 16 feet long, grabbed her and shook her before spitting her out. Mighall has 200 stitches in a bite wound on her right leg. Mighall said her cousin, Syb Mundy, rescued her in the surfing incident off Tasmania.

Mighall was sitting on her surfboard when a black shadow came underneath her in the sea. Mighall screamed when the shark bit her leg. She said the shock was greater than any pain she felt. Her cousin, Syb Mundy, swam/paddled over to her and started punching the shark’s head. Mundy punched the shark until he released Mighall’s leg. Then, Mundy hauled Mighall up on his surfboard and rode the next freak wave back to shore.

Mighall said she did not want the great white to be hunted down and killed. Mighall said she understood the nature and how she was a victim because she was in the shark’s territory. She will continue surfing after she recovers.
