Misha Defonseca & Vera Lee vs Jane Daniel – row over “Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years”

By Clarencia Cynrae on September 7th, 2008

Misha Defonseca, who confessed to fabricating a bestseller fake memoir about being a Holocaust survivor, has asked her judge to affirm a previous $32.4 million award in her favor.

Misha Defonseca argued that her publisher, Jane Daniel, was too late to try to overturn the 2001 jury verdict she and her ghost writer, Vera Lee, won. Misha Defonseca and Vera Lee fought with Jane Daniel over the books profits. Jane Daniel’s lawyer said that the time limitations or other limitations should not be applied here because Defonseca had misled the jury into believing that the book was a true memoir. The Judge, Timothy Feeley, has to rule on Jane Daniel’s motion to toss the verdict to award $32.4 million to Defonseca. “Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years” was a bestseller overseas but not in the US.
