Miriam Margolyes, who plays Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, said she believed that she caused her mother’s stroke by telling her that she was a lesbian.

Miriam Margolyes, 67, thought that public figures should not disclose their sexual orientation because it brings distress. Margolyes gave her interview to BBC Radio 4 in her first ever interview about her sex orientation. Fearing that others might pigeon hole her into a fixed type, Margolyes had avoided speaking publicly about her sexuality.

Forty years ago, Miriam Margolyes told her mother, Ruth Margolyes about her affair with a woman. Three days later, Ruth Margolyes suffered a stroke and could not recover from it until her death in 1974. Miriam Margolyes said she regretted telling her mother the truth because she was convinced it caused her stroke 3 days later. Ruth Margolyes was unable to move or speak until her death.
