Michael Swiergosz, of Toledo, Ohio, held hostage his estranged wife, Barbara Swiergosz, at her workplace. Swiergosz held her against her will at gunpoint. Swiergosz held police at bay for about 5 hours while he locked his wife and himself in an empty apartment of the retirement community she was working in.

Police negotiated with Swiergosz during Tuesday’s incident on April 28. Swiergosz eventually allowed his soon-to-be ex wife, Barbara Swiergosz, to walk out safely while he surrendered. Swiergosz started his hostage taking drama when he entered Sunset House, an assisted living center, on Tuesday morning.

Police said Swiergosz cried and was emotional when he talked about his family, children and business. His wife was divorcing him and his business of providing mortgage loans and home refinancing was bad.

Police said in March 2009, Swiergosz held off police for 3 hours while he was holed up in his home in Springfield Township, of Lucas County. Swiergosz had fired two shots and police responded when someone reported the gunfire. Swiergosz was charged with felonious assault and was due to attend trial on June 10. The charge is a serious one and carries a prison sentence of a maximum of 16 years if convicted. Swiergosz pleaded not guilty to the charges. Swiergosz posted his $25000 bond on April 20.
