Sir Alastair Aird, 78, died in September 2009. Sir Aird is the ex Private Secretary of the Queen Mother. Sir Aird had mesothelioma, the cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Sir Aird had worked at Clarence House, the Queen Mother’s home in London, during the time when asbestos was being removed from the House. Sir Aird may have inhaled some asbestos dust.

Asbestos was used in old houses, hospitals and buildings as an insulation material. In the 1990s, asbestos was removed from Clarence House and Sir Aird supervised the operations. The Queen Mother died in 2002.

Sir Aird was married to Fiona Aird. Lady Aird was shocked that Sir Aird contracted mesothelioma, or the asbestos related cancer. Lady Aird said her husband fell sick after his retirement. Sir Aird suffered symptoms like breathlessness, tiredness and exhaustion.

Sir Aird was diagnosed with cancer but his doctors could not find the primary cause of his cancer. One doctor suggested Sir Aird might have been exposed to asbestos. One doctor did a biopsy and discovered the illness was mesothelioma.

There will be an inquest into the death of Sir Alastair Aird. Lady Aird said she would not be suing the Royal Family even if her late husband died of mesothelioma.
