David Letterman-John McCain 9/24/08:

A little bird told Letterman the big secret. Letterman took it upon himself and for the integrity of the voting citizen to air a segment on what John McCain meant by racing back to Washington. McCain swapped Letterman for CBS’s Kate Couric. Letterman had MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann as the replacement.

Letterman made McCain the subject of comedy for cancelling. Letterman said he wondered why something did not smell right. For one, Letterman criticized McCain for suspending the Presidential Election campaign instead of letting Sarah Palin take over the show. Then Letterman went back to the favorite topic of McCain cancelling. It did not smell like a heroic behavior. Letterman harped on the honor of McCain.

Letterman jabbed at McCain’s age. He offered his explanation on why Palin was not authorized to carry on campaigning. Because Sarah Palin was inexperienced. Letterman asked why McCain had to suspend the presidential campaign. Was the economy sliding or were the polls sliding? Letterman gave McCain a good beat down for causing a worry, problem and insult by cancelling his scheduled appointment on the Letterman show. Letterman showed his frustration by being slighted with the insult. Letterman said, “The road to the White House runs through me.” How dare McCain cancel on Letterman?
