Maynard Smith was a gunner on a plane. Maynard was called “Snuffy” Smith because he had an undistinguished personality. One day, Snuffy Smith saved the lives of six of the men on board his B17 plane after it was hit by German fighter planes.

Maynard Snuffy Smith was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on July 20, 1943. Maynard Snuffy Smith was an unlikely hero.
