Martina Moik: Moik farm slave worker (photos)
By Clarencia Cynrae on January 15th, 2009Martina Moik, 55, of Austria, has been kept as a slave on a remote Alpine farm in Styria, Austria. Moik has been working on the farm for the past 40 years. Moik was an indentured slave.
Social workers who interviewed her said Moik has learning difficulties, which made it hard for her to communicate and tell her predicament earlier. Moik told she had been eating bread and marmalade for the past few years. Moik said she was well treated by the dairy farmer until 2004, when he died. Moik received work clothes, dresses, 3 meals daily and a TV in her room. The farmer’s wife beat her, pulled her hair, removed her TV and gave her bread with marmalade for her meals.
Moik was seen by visitor over the years but no one realized her situation because she had difficulty communicating. Recently, Moik looked unwell and a salesman who had visited the farm tipped off the police.
