By Therese Lisieux on January 16th, 2009Updated November 7 2009 – “Nairobi to Shenzhen” is the autobiography of Mark Okoth Obama Ndesandjo. Ndesandjo wrote about his childhood and memories of his abusive father. Ndesandjo is President Barack Obama’s half brother. They share a common father.
Ndesandjo’s parents are Barack Obama Sr and Ruth Nidesand. Ms Nidesand was the third wife of Obama Sr. Ndesandjo was born in Kenya. After his parents divorced, Ndesandjo relocated to the US and studied there.
Ndesandjo wrote that his father was a wife beater and child beater. Ndesandjo recounted the times when his parents fought. He wrote that his father often laid hands on his mother and himself.
Barack Obama Sr died in 1982. Ndesandjo did not meet his half brother when they were children.
Ndesandjo said he looked forward to seeing his half brother again when he visits China in November 2009.
Ndesandjo has lived in China for 7 years and he married a Chinese woman in 2008. He’s looking forward to introducing his wife to his brother Barack soon.
Ndesandjo’s book is partly self-published and he did not get any advance payment for writing his book. Ndesandjo remains committed to his personal goals of writing to get over his past, highlight domestic abuse, child abuse and move forward. Ndesandjo has pledged 15% of the profits to be donated to a charity for children.
Ndesandjo has explained his surname was taken from his mother’s second husband. He did not want to take advantage of the family name and has refused to endorse products using his famous name.

Mark Ndesandjo (photo below) is Barack Obama’s half brother. Mark Ndesandjo was born Mark Obama but he used his mother Ruth Ndesandjo’s surname. Ndesandjo has lived in Shenzhen, China, for 7 years. Ndesandjo works as a marketing consultant and he helped establish a chain of eateries called Cabin BBQ in China.
Ndesandjo resembles Barack Obama in appearance ever so slightly. Ndesandjo speaks China’s language, Mandarin/Chinese and practices Chinese calligraphy writing. Ndesandjo, whose wife is Chinese, is a vegetarian. Ndesandjo has tried to live a low key life away from the media glare. Ndesandjo appeared in public to perform a small concert on the piano to raise funds for an orphanage.
Ndesandjo ignored the press at his concert. It is known Ndesandjo used his mother Ruth’s surname. Mark Ndesandjo was born in Kenya and moved to US when he was a young child.
Ndesandjo said he would be at the Inauguration.
