Marcus Smith, 31, was fatally shot by police on Sunday, May 17. Smith was at a house party in South Osage Avenue, Inglewood. Police claimed Smith pointed a semi-automatic weapon at them.

One police officer was shot in his right leg. Police suspected the shot was fired by Smith but they need to conduct tests on the gun to be sure.

Marcus Smith and his girlfriend, Kalonna LaCount, were leaving the party by the stairs when police fired at him. LaCount claimed Smith had held his hands up in the air when police fired repeatedly at him. LaCount claimed she did not know if Smith was armed.

LaCount said she was engaged to Smith and had been with him for the past 18 years. LaCount and Smith had 3 daughters together. The girls are all below 12 years old.

Before this incident, the Inglewood Police Department was already under investigation for alleged use of excessive force. In May – Sep 2008, four unarmed suspects were fatally shot by police. From 2003 – 2008, five out of the eleven suspects killed by police were unarmed.
