By Therese Lisieux on November 18th, 2008Marcheline Bertrand was Angelina Jolie’s mother. Her real name was Marcia Lynne “Marcheline” Bertrand.
Jolie brought up her mother when she was in London for a press conference on Mon., Nov. 17. Jolie broke down in tears as she recounted memories of her mother Marcheline Bertrand. Ms. Bertrand passed away in Jan., 2007.
Marcheline Bertrand had studied acting but was not an actress. Bertrand was a producer. Bertrand’s documentary “Trudell” was about the Native American activist John Trudell. “Trudell” was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005.
Bertrand was married to Jon Voight on December 12, 1971. Bertrand and Voight had two children; James Haven and Angelina Jolie. Bertrand and Voight separated in 1976. Voight and Bertrand filed for divorce in 1978. Their divorce was finalized on April 14 1980.
Bertrand met Bill Day, a film maker in 1978. Day and Bertrand lived together for 12 years.
Jolie said that despite having a formidable name like Marcheline, her mother was soft and gentle, like a Marshmallow. Jolie said her sibling and herself called Marcheline as Marshmallow as a joke because of her nature. Jolie said her mother Marcheline was the kind of woman she related to. Marcheline Bertrand was soft and gentle but when it came to protecting her kids, she was fierce. Jolie said the movie Changeling was like Marcheline Bertrand, because the motherly character, Christine Collins, in the movie fought hard to know the truth about her kidnapped son.
Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56 in 2007.
