Lt Dan Choi is the first New York National Guard member to be recommended for discharge for violating their policy against homosexual conduct. Dan Choi publicly announced he is a gay man.

Choi violated the military’s code of not asking and not telling a service person’s sexual orientation. Choi went before the Federal Recognition Board. The Board deliberated for 4 hours before deciding to recommend Choi for discharge.

Choi is a combat veteran. Choi said the action gave him the chance to fight back. Dan Choi did just that be being in the spotlight when he acted as the celebrity grand Marshall in San Francisco’s Gay Pride Parade.
