By Clarencia Cynrae on December 8th, 2008

Russ Martin has been fired. Russ Martin was dropped from Live 105.3. CBS had leaked hints that Russ Martin would be dismissed when it changed its logo to include “Live Sports”. Recently, CBS aired live the professional and college football games. CBS Live 105.3 has been switched to being sports orientated.

Russ Martin’s photo is below.

  1. Blah Blah Blacksheep Says:

While I like Jagger in the morning, Russ Martin was really the only reason I listened to 105.3, and I’m the “target demographic” (30’s male).

I enjoyed Pugs & Kelly some-what when they were on, but then those two got lazy and just turned into a radio show that talked about TV shows they watch (which they STILL do over at 93.3 The Bone … talk about boring. That’s such lazy radio, I don’t know why they haven’t been fired from there yet.) Speaking of which, after the news that Russ was “fired” from 105.3, Pugs & Kelly kept running it into the ground, and commented on it saying they had “won”. Won what? You didn’t beat Russ Martin in ratings. He got laid off due to a format change (or whatever), and you guys pat yourselves on the back as if you had beaten him at his own game. Then you proceed to talk about all the lame TV shows you’re going to watch tonight. Holy crap, wake me when they finally get some REAL content in their show.

105.3 brought in Ben & Skin as Pug/Kelly replacements, and those guys are lame. They’re like the “comedian” kid in school who just didn’t know when to STFU; they come up with some bit or catch-phrase, and proceed to beat it into the ground. They come up with half-way interesting “bits”, but then ruin it by laughing at their own stuff while playing it, as if trying to provide their own laugh-track to cue the audience that “hey! this is the part that’s funny … hahahaha!” Them acting like their pre-recorded bits are catching them off-guard when they listen to them again and laughing at them as if they’re hearing it for the first time IS NOT FUNNY. It ruins it for the rest of us. They’re show is pretty much summed up as follows:

    1) Come back from commercial, and go over (for the 15th billion time) what’s going to happen every 10 minutes during the next 2 hours, because they have to take a break every 10 minutes.

    2) Play some lame bit and laugh to it
… or … talk about some BS topic (revolver) & ask for audience feedback so they can then cut everyone off and ignore audience feedback, there-by cramming their lame opinions onto everyone

    3) Interlude with occasional “randomness” to try to grasp at laughs while using the same “greatness”, “it is what it is lesbian” and other BS catch-phrases they run into the ground.

    4) Eventually go back to sports talk, regardless of what they said was going to come up, because, really, all they want to do is talk about sports anyways.

Those guys were barely fit for afternoon radio, much less drive-time. While I’m sure “The Fan” will be able to squeeze a niche for itself in the sports-talk FM market, it’s basically shooting itself in the foot by putting Ben & Skin at the helm with the drive-time slot.

Essentially, 105.3 is bringing the pistol up to its head for a very deadly game of “sports talk radio roulette”. Ben & Skin may shine a bit in that format, but what I see is someone taking a good radio station and turning it into just another mediocre sports-talk station with a bunch of yes-men hosts that are trite and mildly entertaining but also boot-licking and easy to control by the media giant. Seriously, you get rid of Russ Martin so you can turn the station into a pale-shadow of The Ticket… Pfffttt, whatever.

As for Jagger, I don’t see how he’s going to be able to stay on, since his show wasn’t very sports-related. I doubt they’ll let him keep the same format even though he says he will. If I were him, I’d be worried and looking for a new job, preferably at whatever station picks up Russ. But, I think Jagger is at the point in his career where he’s just going to be lazy and rest on his laurels, riding this as long as he can until he fades into obscurity. Mondo, Dean & Jasmine add a dynamic to that show that Jagger could not pull off by himself. So, if he’s going to rest on his laurels, he’s going to flush their careers, too.

Russ is probably going over to satellite now (or jail). I can understand the station not wanting to risk such an “out of control” factor as Russ, but you guys are shooting yourselves in the foot, and basically saying to the audience “why do something entertaining and different when we can just be safe and lazy like other stations and drone on about sports?” Stupid. I predict you’ll be changing format in about 6 months. Or, Ben & Skin’s careers will be cut short. Then again, if Pugs & Kelly are the best they have to compete with during drive-time … hell, Ben & Skin may be the best drive-time show we have now. And that’s not a compliment.

  2. Dave Says:

Russ isn’t going to jail. He and Amy are back together, and no matter what really happened the prosecution’s going to have a hell of a time making a case for anything with no accuser. He’s also probably not going to go to satellite. It seems to me that he just really enjoys DFW radio, and even if he ended up on some weak station, it seems like he’d rather be doing what he enjoys than doing what he wouldn’t as much even if it paid more. I may be wrong, but that’s just based on hearing him talk and sifting out the real from the bit.

  3. BIG BOB Says:

RUSS HAS ALREADY SAID HES PROBABLY NOT GOING TO WORK ANYWHERE, HE IS STILL UNDER CONTRACT FOR 4 YEARS AT OVER 7 FIGURES….I KNOW I WOULDNT BE LOOKING FOR A JOB IF SOMEONE WOULD PAY ME OVER A MILLION TO SIT AT HOME
