Updated July 11 2009 – Colleen Shipman and Bill Oefelein are engaged. Shipman and Oefelein now live in Alaska. Shipman’s lawyer released the announcement on her behalf. Shipman and Oefelein have not told when they would be getting married.

Lisa Nowak, an astronaut, was arrested and charged with kidnapping, battery and burglary with assault. Nowak was accused of trying to kidnap Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman from Orlando International Airport in February 2007. The alleged motive of Lisa Nowak was because of a space shuttle pilot, Bill Oefelein, who she and Shipman liked.

The panel of 3 judges ruled that Nowak’s interview with police after her arrest could not be used as evidence in court. The court said investigators took advantage of Nowak as she had not waived her Miranda rights, had not spoken voluntarily with police and hand hot slept for the past 24 hours. Lisa Nowak’s car contained diapers, a knife, mallet, a BB gun, maps from Houston to the Orlando airport and a map to Shipman’s Cape Canaveral home.

While Lisa Nowak’s interview was thrown out and good news for her defence, the ruling that said physical evidence in her car could be used was not good news.
