Leo Frank & Mary Phagan: Leo Frank & Mary Phagan story (photos)
By Therese Lisieux on November 2nd, 2009Leo Frank was accused of raping and killing Mary Phagan. Frank was a Jew and Phagan was a child worker, 13 years old, in the Atlanta pencil factory that Frank was in charge of. Frank was a man who was white, northern, Jewish and an industrialist. These qualities were opposed by the locals who embraced the opposite values.
Leo Frank was tried, convicted and sentenced based mostly on the testimony of the night watchman at the factory. He was Newt Lee. Leo Frank was sentenced to death but the Governor commuted his sentence.
Before Frank could be released, around 25 men broke into the prison and kidnapped Leo Frank. They lynched him and hanged him in a tree. The death photo of Leo Frank was published as postcards and in other material. If you wish to look, just type in Leo Frank into a Google search box.
There was some controversy over the trial of Leo Frank. There were books on Leo Frank. Some supported his innocence, while others condemned him.
Leo Frank, RIP.

It was probably the most controversial murder case in Atlanta. In Georgia some thought he was the murderer of his company’s employee–13 year old Mary Phaegan. Some thought it was the black man
and black men were pretty easy to convict. No one can say for sure.
