Larry Shofe, swimming coach, committed suicide

By Clarencia Cynrae on August 20th, 2008

Larry Shofe, Head Coach of the Pilot Aquatic Club (PAC) in Knoxville Tennessee, killed himself in a suicide on Monday, August 18, 2008. Larry Shofe was the former coach for Sarasota Sharks, in the Sarasota YMCA.

He shifted from Sarasota to Knoxville because of the better security with the 4 year contract. Larry Shofe trained 6 swimmers from Sarasota who made it to the Olympic trials this summer. Larry Shofe’s wife tried to call him but could not get in touch. She asked a friend to go over to the house. This friend found Larry Shofe seated in his Corvette, with the car’s cover still on. There was a hose from the exhaust pipe leading into the driver’s window. Shofe was dead.

I was so sad when i heard this. He would have been my coach if he stayed in Sarasota and I’ve known him. That makes it all the more harder to believe.
