When the sufferer eats protein, it eats becomes toxic and potentially fatal. Lara Williams-Lourenco, 8, lives on tube feeding. Williams-Lourenco has a special diet that feeds her essential vitamins and some protein.
One symptom of methylmalonic academia is the absence of appetite. Williams-Lourenco is allowed some treats to encourage her to eat. Tomato soup, sphagetti hoops and dark chocolate mints are among her favorites. Doctors said Williams-Lourenco may experience more problems as she grows older.
