King of Hawaii
By Clarencia Cynrae on August 18th, 2008Hawaii became the 50th American state in 1959. Before that, Iolani Palace, in Honolulu, was built for King Kalakaua. He was the second last monarch of Hawaii. The next in line was Queen Liliuokalani, the islands’ last ruling monarch. US supported the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. On Friday, August 15, 2008, a group of protestors forced their way into Iolani Palace. They wanted to seat ther elected king on the throne.
The group announced that Majesty Akahi Nui, the King of Hawaii, had reoccupied the throne of Hawaii. It was all over in 2 hours when State police entered Iolani Palace and arrested 22 people and charged 14 of them for trespassing. In April 2008, a different protest group said it was a sovereignty group and tried to occupy Iolani Palace. It called itself The Hawaiian Kingdom Government and staged sit-ins. Since then, it has held regular meetings at the palace grounds with permits from authorities.
